This famous wonderworking icon originated from a 10th Century Mount Athos monastic community.  The words, “It is truly meet to bless Thee, O Theotokos, ever-blessed and most pure, and the Mother of our God,” were given to a simple monk as he was visited by the Archangel Gabriel.  Since that time, the verses that were taught by the angel are used regularly in Eastern Orthodox services.
